Being a hippie wasn't just a matter of dress, behaviour, economic status or social standing. And the movement of the '60s & '70s wasn't, as some thought, based completely on sex, drugs and rock & roll.
"Hippie" is a philosophical approach to life, emphasizing freedom, peace, love and respect for others and for the earth. Hippies have a sense of responsibility and concern for the problems and injustices of our society.
The hippie ideals and values of anti-materialism, non-violence, evnironmentalism, and caring for each other are still sound, valuable and appealing to a broad range of American people.
Realistically, the world needs hippies and actually the hippie culture never really died.Quite likely there's a little bit of hippie in each of us. Hippies values continue to help focus everyone's concern on social issues, the environment and to highlight our responsibilities to our own planet and to future generations.

For sure today's hippies have become more subdued in their rejection of mainstream values. And it's also true that mainstream has embraced many of the values of the 1960s hippie culture.
Be sure, the goal is not to make everyone a hippie. We want to continue to influence others by example, through love and tolerance and teaching the hippie way.
There is a pendulum and it's beginning to swing back again as involvement is social and environmental issues is growing. But it's not just a frame of mind. It takes time and people to make this happen. And that's where you and I come in.

Take a listen. Brings back some fond, old memories. And equally as meaningful today as it was back then.
